A Guide to BASIS Charter Schools Open Enrollment

Posted by BASIS.ed on October 16, 2019 at 6:00 AM

BASIS Charter Schools are public, non-selective, tuition-free schools of choice that serve grades K–12 and require no admissions testing. All students are welcome, as long as they are willing to work hard to reach high standards. Open Enrollment allows all interested applicants an equal opportunity for the available seats in the charter school of their choice.

Open Enrollment dates for the 2020-21 school year:

Arizona: November 6–December 16, 2019

Louisiana & Texas: October 23–December 16, 2019

Washington, D.C: Grades 9–12: December 16, 2019–February 3, 2020

 Grades 5–8: December 16, 2019–March 2,2020

How do I apply? What is a charter school enrollment lottery?

For the best chance of placement in one of our high-performing, internationally benchmarked schools in Arizona, Louisiana, or Texas, apply during the Open Enrollment period by visiting enrollBASIS.com. You may apply to more than one BASIS Charter School, but you must submit separate applications, per student, to each of your preferred schools. Applications do not need be signed to be included in the lottery, or to be considered for acceptance. Only applications completed during the Open Enrollment period are included in the lottery.

At each grade level, if the applications received during Open Enrollment outnumber the available seats, placement is determined by a lottery and a waitlist position. Enrollment offers will be extended for entry grades in Arizona schools on January 9, 2020, and on January 14, 2020, for Texas and Louisiana schools. The entry grade may be kindergarten, grade 5, or grade 6, depending on the school. Offers for non-entry grades will be extended later in the spring, after our current students complete the re-enrollment process.

Applicants who are offered enrollment at a BASIS Charter School will be provided with instructions for accepting the offer, and for printing and signing the registration packet.

Students wishing to attend our BASIS DC campus should apply during the DC Open Enrollment period via the My School DC common application, accessible at enrollBASIS.com. BASIS DC enrollment offers will be extended on March 27, 2020.

What is a waitlist?

Applicants selected in the lottery are offered a seat at the BASIS Charter School to which they applied, and then choose to either accept or decline it. Applicants who are not selected in the lottery will be placed on a waitlist. Any applications submitted after the Open Enrollment period closes are added to the waitlist, in the order which they are received, and processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Siblings of students who have accepted a seat are given priority on the waitlist.

Being placed on the waitlist, however, is not the end of your charter school dreams. It is possible to move on the waitlist throughout the spring and summer, and even up to the first weeks of school. Please note, a waitlist position may fluctuate—either up or down. When the number increases, it is usually due to sibling priority placement. BASIS Charter School waitlists do not roll over from year to year.

For the best chance of attending the BASIS Charter School of your choice for the 2020–21 school year, be sure to apply during the Open Enrollment period at enrollBASIS.com. Good luck!
